The first Thor movie did well so naturally a sequel would be made. That sequel would be made and released in November of 2013. The movie was called Thor: The Dark World. The movie had a budget of $170 million and made over $644 million. The movie is the second one to be released in Phase 2 of the MCU. The movie still stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor as well as returning cast members like Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins and more.
The movie begins with a flashback to the past. Bor the father of Odin fought with the Dark Elf Malekith and his Dark Elves. Bor manages to defeat the Dark Elves and banish them for the rest of their lives. In the present day we see Thor and his warriors t ake on some problems in Vanaheim. They subdue the threat and head back to Asgard. We also find out that Loki is in prison for what he did during the events of the Avengers. Meanwhile back on Earth Jane is up to her usual job after getting through with a date. They find out a disturbance in the realms and she finds something called the Aether. It turns out that the returning Dark Elves are after this Aether. Thor heads to Earth to help Jane and takes her to Asgard.
The Dark Elves under Malekith invade Asgard and leave a lot of damage. Thor decides to take Jane away from Asgard as the Dark Elves may return to attack again. Thor takes Loki along because he can travel dimensions and worlds with ease. During their encounter with the Dark Elves, Loki is presumably killed. Thor and Jane head back to the Earth where they are witnessing the Conversion where the nine realms are lining up. The Dark Elves head to Earth to take back the Aether. This is where the final battle of the movie takes place.
After a grueling battle with Malekith, Thor manages to defeat him and get the Aether back. In the end of the movie we see that Loki is disguised as Odin and what he did with him is a mystery. Thor the Dark World may did well in sales but in terms of reception it just went okay. Just like the first movie, Thor the Dark World could have used more. It still suffered from the usual Marvel bad villain syndrome. Never the less it did well so in 2017 Thor Ragnarok will be coming and it looks to be good.
