The very first Power Rangers movie was released in 1995 and the second one was in 1997. Those movies served as extensions of the show as they followed up on a previous season and continued on to bring in the next season. It only took them 20 years to release a new Power Rangers film. This film is a bit different since it doesn’t continue any of the current running seasons of Power Rangers and currently it is in its 25th season so that’s rather impressive. The movie simply dubbed as Power Rangers 2017 was released in March 22 of 2017. The movie is still currently airing in theaters as of today but we’re going to have our review of the movie. There will be some minor spoilers so if you haven’t seen the movie yet, be sure to avoid reading this review for now.
Power Rangers 2017 takes elements from the Mighty Morphin series. The characters’ name are all taken from that series. The other elements like the Zords, the location and even the villain being Rita Repulsa are all in the mix. The cast is fresh and new and they mixed up the characters a bit after the unintentional casting choices in the Mighty Morphin series. In terms of the plot it is a bit straight forward.
We have five teenagers living in Angel Grove. They are very different from each other and through one event they end up being the Power Rangers. They start off weak but through the course of the movie they get stronger and of course the climactic battle against Rita and Goldar would be in the Zord battle. Let’s now get to the actual review of the movie as to what made it good and not so good in some aspects.
In terms of aesthetics there really isn’t much of an issue. Cinematography has improved over the years. Plus CGI would be the way to go although when it came to that there wasn’t much of an issue. The music as well is attuned to today’s generation but again not much of an issue and they even played a part of the original song in a slight remix in the movie. In terms of story telling, it still had that campy and cheesy feeling that the original series had.
It did have a much serious tone to it but not too serious. There were still some fun elements to it but not really as comical to the series. One thing it could have used more fight scenes. Most of the fights were in those training montages. They don’t have a serious fight until the end of the movie and by then they just ride the Zords and go for the final battle. Overall, Power Rangers 2017 was okay. It wasn’t anything special but it still holds a charm to old time viewers and caters to the newer ones.
